Free Webinar: ADU Safety and Legalization

The Piedmont Planning & Building Department and the Casita Coalition are presenting a free webinar at 11:00 am on March 29 on Informal ADUs: Safety-First Legalization, a discussion on informal or unpermitted ADUs. Panelists will discuss preserving existing homes and making them safer for tenants while preventing displacement for tenants and the homeowners who rely on rental income to maintain their own housing.

Panelists will also discuss current efforts to improve equitable access by reducing costs and other barriers for homeowners to bring their ADUs into legal status. Presenters include: Katherine Peoples of HPP Cares, a HUD counseling agency that worked with homeowners using CalHFA ADU grants to legalize their unpermitted units; a certified inspector who will discuss the safety standards in California Housing Code (used under State ADU law to assess safety of unpermitted units); and program staff from jurisdictions with ADU legalization programs. The panel will be hosted by Rafael Perez, board president of Casita Coalition.

Free webinar is 11:00 am - 12:00 noon on March 29, 2024
